October Arts Events Update


Some good new events have been added since October Arts News was published (highlighted in yellow) and one Sunday jazz cancelled. If you're looking for half-term activities, I have included anything arty that I could find. Click on links for more details. Some early November items are at the end. Any November events not already submitted, please send by 21 October for inclusion in the November issue.

Until Sun 23 October: MATISSE Drawing with Scissors – visual art

A Hayward Gallery Touring exhibition from the Southbank Centre, London, featuring 35 prints of spectacular cut-outs produced by Matisse in the last four years of his life. Created by 'carving' into paper that had been hand-painted with gouache, the cut-outs include some of his most colourful and iconic images, such as The Snail and the Blue Nudes.

The Heseltine Gallery, Chenderit School, Archery Road, Middleton Cheney OX17 2QR. 10am to 4pm, Sunday to Friday (closed Saturdays). Admission free. See 23 October for a family paper-cut activity.

Sat 15 & Sun 16 Syresham Art Exhibition – visual arts

Local artists show paintings and photographs with a wide range of topics and prices. Syresham Village Hall. 11am to 5pm (4.30pm Saturday). Admission free. Information: 01280 850417.

Sat 15 The Duke – film(cert.12)

Village Cinema screening of the charming comedy, starring Helen Mirren and Jim Broadbent, playing a 60 year old taxi driver who steals Goya's portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery in 1961. Flore Village Hall, 7:30pm. Pay on the door.

Sat 15 Phil Beer – music SOLD OUT

Back by popular demand, the Phil half of Show of Hands returns for an intimate solo gig presented by Shutlanger Music Events. Tickets £16 plus a £1 booking fee per party. Fri 21 Oktoberfest– social music

Brackley & District Band open their club for a German-themed social evening. Have a beer and German snacks, sing some songs, bring your instrument and have a toot. Drop in from 8pm. 2 Draymans Walk, Brackley.

Sat 22 Songs of Angels – music

Fiori Musicali Choir sings glorious music by Byrd, Tallis, Gabrieli, Taverner and more from the sixteenth century plus Tavener's Song for Athene and Svyati, featuring Poppy Walshaw, cello, in the idyllic setting of St Mary The Virgin Church, Fawsley NN11 3BA.

Sat 22 Marvellous Musical Miscellany – music

Fundraising concert at St Lawrence Church, Chantry Lane, Towcester by Musica MK charity choir. 7:30pm. Tickets from the benefice office,

Sun 23 Drawing with Scissors: Hallowe'en Paper-cuts – half term children's activity

Family activity for children (age 5 to 12) with adults, creating a Hallowe'en picture with paper. Come and be inspired by the Matisse exhibition (see above)! Workshop with paper-cut artist Martine Soldano of Snips & Pieces. The Heseltine Gallery, Chenderit School, Archery Road, Middleton Cheney OX17 2QR. 10:30am to 12.30pm. Free. Mon 31 Oct to Sun 6 November GENFEST – theatre

A week dedicated to supporting the work and development of professional and emerging performing artists. The festival also includes two productions, Wild Onion and Othello RE:MXwhich will take place at the end of November. Royal & Derngate has developed this festival with direct input from independent artists and it highlights some of the work by those on their Generate Associate Artists programme.
