Northamptonshire's Volunteer Police Service
(updated 04/01/10)Northants Police currently has over 180 Volunteer Police Officers (Special Constables), all of which contribute to keeping your community safe and "making the difference" within it.
Special Constables are involved in a very diverse mixture of police work, a typical shift can involve crewing up with another Special or Regular Officer, and responding to calls from the public when they come in. This could be anything form anti-social behaviour to a serious assault! You may find that a large amount of your time will be spent carrying out proactive high visibility patrols in your area. This is of course very important as it improves public confidence and can deter crime before it happens.
Special Constables are often called upon to support specific operations across the force. This can present you with a number of exciting opportunities as you could be involved in, Plain clothes work, intelligence gathering and executing search warrants, to name but a few.
Becoming a Special Constable is ideal for those who want to help their local Police Officers and PCSO's and put something back in to their community.
It is also an ideal position for those who wish to become full-time Police Officers to gain excellent experience and life skills to aid them in applying. For more information on the role, to receive an application form, or to view our upcoming Open Evenings please visit:-www.northants.police.uk/careers or call Lizzi Betts on 03000 111 222 ext 2098, our specials recruitment administrator who will be happy to advise you.
We look forward to hearing from you!

Dog Advice
If you can't keep your dog under control, keep it on a lead
There had been a number of incidents reported to the Parish Council regarding dogs not being properly under control when walking in Foxfield Country Park.
On a right of way your dog does not have to be on a lead but it does have to be 'under close control'. This phrase is not defined but pretty much means that if dog will not always come, straight away, when called even when he's chasing things, and then stay there, he could be at risk of being seen to worry people or animals. So if there is any chance he might go off then the lead is the best option.
The Control of Dogs Order 1992
Requires all dogs, in a public place, to wear a collar which has the name & address of the owner on it (or on a tag attached to the collar).
Dangerous Dog Act 1991
It is a criminal offence (for the owner and/or the person in charge of the
dog) to allow a dog to be 'dangerously out of control' in a public place, a
place where it is not permitted to be, and some other areas. A 'dangerously
out of control' dog can be defined as a dog that has injured someone or a
dog that a person has grounds for reasonable apprehension that it may do so.
Something as simple as your dog chasing, barking at or jumping up at a
person or child could lead to a complaint, so ensure that your dog is under
control at all times.
If your dog injures a person, it may be seized by the police and your penalty may include a prison sentence and/or a ban on keeping dogs. There is also an automatic presumption that your dog will be destroyed (unless you can persuade the court that it is not a danger to the public, in which case it may be subject to a control order). You may also have to pay a fine, compensation and costs.
Finally, dog owners please be considerate when walking your dog, remember not everyone like dogs and the Country Park is for all to enjoy!

Is your Dog Legal ?
Under control of dogs order 1992, any dog in a public place must wear a collar with the name and address of the owner engraved or written on it, or engraved on a tag. You can be fined up to £5,000 if your dog does not wear the correct identification.

Playpark Vandalism
(updated 11/10/09)Over the weekend (9/10th October) a large amount of vandalism occurred in the playparks within Grange Park. Due to health and Safety reasons the Parish Council has made the decision to tape off those areas most affected with some red and white warning tape. This tape has already been replaced twice and we would appreciate it if the users of the equipment could be respectful and appreciate the reason why the tape has been installed.
Grange Park Parish Council would also like to suggest to all residents that if anyone sees any acts of vandalism happening within the Parish then please phone the Police and report the incident which will obtain a police reference number.
Thanking you for your co-operation

ITV Fixers
ITV Fixers is a special collaboration between ITV and various charities, encouraging young people aged 16-25 to "fix" issues or problems to help themselves and others. For example, the midlands is currently experiencing soaring rates of youth unemployment - perhaps some young people might like to come up with a new way of offering support to the young unemployed? Or to raise awareness of cultural or environmental issues? Anything they feel strongly about.
We will offer them funding, expertise and support to do this (we have our own dedicated teams of youth workers and creative resources people) - whether by creating a website, information leaflets, a short film, a pop video.... whatever the Fixers want to do. In addition, some Fixes will be televised on ITV Central news.
The project has been running successfully in the south of England for over a year and now it's rolling out across the midlands - with a big television launch in November. So we want to get the word out to young people that this is happening and invite them to take part.
Please see our website: www.itvfixers.com for more information and many examples of past Fixes.
Please encourage as many young people as possible to check it out!
