Dear all,

Northamptonshire Crimestoppers are urging people across the District to be more vigilant when protecting themselves against car theft.

Many homes are being burgled purely to steal car keys. Security on many vehicles has improved, so the only way to steal them is to have the key. In the last six months 47 vehicles have been stolen across the District.

For your free car key burglary crime prevention pack containing advice, window sticker, key ring and key safe hook, visit your local Police Station or Fire Station or call 08453 100 100 extension 3189 (while stocks last).

Crime figures show 3.4% drop

A 3.4% drop in crime has been recorded in Northants West, which covers Sth Northants according to end of year crime stats published by Northants Police. Most categories of crime countywide have also fallen, including house burglary down 5.8%, robbery down 15.5%, vehicles crime down 11.4% and criminal damage down 7.3%. there have been 1,244 fewer crimes and therefore fewer victims in the Sth Northants area over the past year.

General Update

There is a thriving trade in scrap metal – lead from roofs and gulleys; copper from electrical cables; aluminium from beer barrels; iron from manhole covers. Wea re all asked to be vigilant and to dial 99 if we see any suspicious activity. If some residents are fearful of retaliation then call the NHW Co-Ordinator (Steve Cates 07887 626153 or 01604 701787) and I will act as a cut-out. Or call Crimestoppers on 0800-555111, their phone number is set up in such a manner that there is no way they can know who is calling – and they may offer a reward for information.

Recently a number of Anglia Water uniforms were stolen from a vehicle at Great Bowden near Market Harborough. These may be used in distraction burglaries so we need to be on our guard. Genuine officials carry an identity card. They will hand it to you through a window or a door (on the chain). If you call the number on the reverse of the card, the operator will describe the appearance of the caller. In any event, never leave the caller alone in the house, even if you have to ask a neighbour to join you.

We must continue not to buy from Pedlars or cold callers at the door and report any suspicious characters, the message will sink in that there is no profit to be made and that we are eliminating potential criminals who may be spying out the land for themselves or for accomplices. Please note that cold callers are liable to arrest if working our areas marked as “No cold call” zones. I urge all residents not to buy from casual callers at the door but to deal only with people they know and can trust and particularly to support businesses in the village.

So for those who remember Shaw Taylor….keep em peeled
